Sump Pump Failed During the Thaw: Des Moines Basement Triage
Snowmelt plus saturated ground overwhelms a pump that worked fine all winter. What to salvage, what to bin, and how fast the water table drops.
A sump pump that ran all winter without complaint will fail in March, and it fails because the duty cycle changes rather than because the pump wore out. Why the thaw beats the pump
Frozen ground sheds meltwater instead of absorbing it. Through a normal rain the soil around your foundation takes a share of the water and the pump handles the rest. During a thaw the top layer is still frozen, so nearly all of the melt travels sideways along the frost line and arrives at the footing drain at once.
The pump then runs close to continuously for days rather than cycling a few times an hour. A third-horsepower unit rated for intermittent duty can move plenty of water on paper and still burn out under that load, and the float switch — a mechanical part with a finite number of cycles — becomes the most likely thing to give up first.
The failure modes, in the order we find them
Stuck float leads the list by a wide margin. Sediment, a shifted pump, or a power cord wrapped around the float arm holds the switch down or up, and the pump either never starts or never stops. Second is the check valve, which sits in the discharge line and keeps pumped water from falling back into the pit. When it fails the pump moves the same gallon repeatedly and the pit never empties.
A frozen discharge line is the specifically Iowa failure. The pump works, the impeller spins, and the water has nowhere to go because the outlet buried three feet from the house is plugged with ice. Nothing on the pump itself indicates a problem, which is why homeowners often replace a working unit.
Then there is simple power loss. The storms that bring the most water take lines down, and a pump without a battery backup during an outage is decoration.
What can be saved
Category of water decides most of it. Clean groundwater through a footing drain is different from a sewer backup, and the same carpet that is salvageable in one case goes to the curb in the other. Assume groundwater unless there is odor or visible contamination.
Carpet pad is a loss every time. Padding is an open-cell sponge and cannot be dried in place at any reasonable cost, so the pad comes out and the carpet may stay if it is lifted, cleaned, and dried within a day or so. Particleboard furniture that has wicked water up its legs is finished; solid wood usually recovers if it dries slowly and evenly.
Drywall is the judgment call. Water wicks upward through gypsum well past the visible tide line, and the standard is to cut above where moisture readings return to normal rather than above where the stain stops. Two inches of extra cut is far cheaper than reopening a finished wall in June.
Getting ahead of next March
Size the pump for the worst week, not the average one. Most metro basements are better served by a half-horsepower unit, and a pit that fills fast enough to worry you deserves a second pump on a higher float as backup rather than a bigger primary alone.
Battery backup is the single upgrade that prevents the most damage, because it covers both outages and primary failure. Test it in the fall by unplugging the primary and pouring water into the pit until the backup starts. Replace the battery on schedule; a five-year-old backup battery is not a backup.
Walk the discharge line before winter. It should exit well away from the foundation, slope continuously, and end where it will not ice over. A simple air gap fitting near the house lets the pump discharge even when the buried run is frozen solid, which turns a flooded basement into a wet patch of lawn.
Extend the downspouts while you are outside. Roof water dumped at the foundation goes straight into the drain tile and back to the same pump you are trying to protect, and six feet of extension does more for a wet basement than most interior work.
