Sewer Backup After a Des Moines Downpour: What Not to Touch

Water rising through a basement floor drain during heavy rain is not the same emergency as a burst pipe, and treating it the same way puts your family at risk. Why the drain runs backward
Portions of the older sewer network in Des Moines carry storm runoff and sanitary waste in the same line. What comes out
Porous materials that absorbed sewage are not salvageable at any price. Carpet and pad, particleboard, upholstered furniture, mattresses, cardboard storage, and insulation all leave the building. Semi-porous and non-porous surfaces can usually be cleaned and kept. What the drying phase looks like afterward

Concrete slabs and block walls release water slowly, so equipment stays until readings at marked points match unaffected areas of the same building. Basements are the slowest rooms in any house to dry because they exchange so little air with the outdoors.
Air scrubbers with HEPA filtration run alongside the drying equipment on a contaminated loss. They capture particulate the removal work puts into the air, which matters in a house where the furnace return is frequently in the same room. Sealing the return during the work prevents the system from distributing anything through the ducts.
