Why the Equipment Stays Three Days, Not Three Hours
The floor feels dry on day one and the building is not. What the meters are reading, and why pulling equipment early costs more.

Surfaces dry first and mean least
Water on a hard surface evaporates quickly with any air movement at all. What matters is the water absorbed into materials — the subfloor, the bottom plates, the studs, the drywall — and those release moisture slowly from the inside out.
A hand on a surface tells you about the top fraction of a millimeter. A meter probing into the material tells you what is actually there, and the two routinely disagree by a wide margin on day one. That gap is the entire reason the process is instrumented rather than judged.
What the equipment is doing
Air movers do not dry anything by themselves. Their job is to break up the layer of saturated air that forms against a wet surface and stalls evaporation, which means directing air along surfaces at an angle rather than blasting a room generally.
Dehumidifiers do the actual removal, pulling water vapor out of the air so evaporation can continue. Without one, air movers simply move moisture from the materials into the air and then back into other materials elsewhere in the building — which is how an unmanaged drying job spreads a problem to rooms that were never wet.
The two work as a system. Running fans with the windows open in Iowa summer humidity actively hurts, because outdoor air at a high dew point carries more moisture in than the fans take out.
Why the schedule cannot be promised on day one
Drying rate depends on how much water was absorbed, what materials are involved, how well the space holds conditioned air, and the weather. Plaster over lath behaves differently from drywall. A basement behaves differently from a second floor.
Three to five days covers most residential losses. Dense materials, concrete, and anything inside a wall cavity or under a floor take longer. A hardwood floor can run well beyond a week.
Readings taken daily at marked points show the trend, and the trend is what indicates whether the plan is working. A material that stops improving over two consecutive days is telling us something is trapping moisture, and the response is to change access or equipment rather than to wait longer.
The cost of stopping early
Equipment removed before materials reach target leaves moisture inside an assembly that then gets closed up. Mold needs a couple of days at suitable moisture to establish, and a wall closed over damp framing supplies exactly that in a place nobody will inspect again.
The second failure shows up as odor weeks later, or as flooring that fails after the repair, or as staining that returns through fresh paint. All of those cost more than the extra two days of equipment.
This is also why the drying log matters to your insurer. Documented daily readings showing materials reaching a defined target is the evidence that the job was completed rather than abandoned, and it protects you if a problem surfaces later.
What you can do while it runs
Leave the equipment alone. Fans get repositioned deliberately, and moving them changes the airflow pattern the plan depends on. Turning them off overnight for the noise extends the job.
Keep the building closed and conditioned. The dehumidifiers are working against a defined volume of air, and opening windows resets that.
Ask to see the readings. Any competent restorer will show you the log and explain what the numbers mean.
Questions worth asking your restorer
Ask what target readings they are drying to and how those were established. The answer should reference unaffected areas of your building rather than a number from a chart, because a target that ignores your house is not a target.
Ask what happens if a material stops improving. A plan that only involves waiting longer is not a plan.
Ask for the final documentation package in writing at the start. Photographs, daily logs, and a clearance record are standard, and a company that hesitates over producing them is telling you something useful before the work begins rather than after.
